The Ritual Guide
Resin is the oldest form of incense there is, and the hardest to start with. Almost nobody explains it properly. This page does.
First, the one thing that matters
Resin is melted, not burned.
Almost everyone gets this wrong the first time, because the word "incense" suggests fire. Put damar directly onto a flame or onto glowing charcoal and it really does burn - and it smells like it. Acrid, sharp, with a bitter edge that has nothing to do with the resin itself. That smell is combustion. It is not damar.
Warm the same resin gently instead and it softens, pools, and releases its fragrance slowly over half an hour or more. Same resin, completely different experience. If you take one thing from this page, take this one.
What you need
An electric resin burner - easiest
A low, steady plate. Nothing to light, nothing to time, no ash. This is what The Ritual Burner is for, though any electric resin warmer will do the job.
A tealight warmer - works well
The kind sold for essential oils. The flame sits well below the dish, so the heat reaching the resin is indirect. Press a small square of foil into the dish and it stays clean.
Charcoal discs - we would rather you did not
The traditional method, and the reason a lot of people think they dislike resin. Charcoal runs far hotter than resin needs. You get smoke, soot, and a burnt top note sitting over the actual scent. If you do use charcoal, bury the disc in sand and rest the resin on a thin layer of sand rather than on the coal itself.
The ritual, step by step
- Line the plate. A small square of aluminium foil, pressed into a shallow dish shape. Cleanup later becomes lifting it off. Skip this and you will be scraping.
- Warm it. About sixty seconds on an electric burner. A little longer on a tealight.
- Use less than you think. One or two pieces the size of a grain of rice. Genuinely. A heaped teaspoon is not a stronger ritual, it is a heavy room and a wasted jar.
- Wait. Thirty to sixty seconds before anything happens. The resin softens at the edges, goes glossy, then begins to release. That pause is normal.
- Let it run. Around forty-five minutes from a single pinch. The scent shifts as it goes - brightest early, warmest and deepest towards the end.
- Lift while warm. When you are done, lift the foil off while the plate is still warm and fold it up. Once resin cools it sets hard, and hard resin is a chore.
When it goes wrong
It smells burnt or acrid
Too hot. Lower the heat, or move the resin further from the source. On charcoal, add more sand. Burnt resin does not recover - clear the plate and start again with a fresh piece.
Nothing is happening
Usually not enough time, occasionally not enough heat. Give it a full minute before you adjust anything. If five minutes pass with no scent at all, your plate is not getting hot enough.
There is thick smoke
Melting resin gives a thin wisp, or nothing visible at all. Thick smoke means it is combusting. Turn the heat down.
The plate is a sticky mess
You skipped the foil. Warm the plate slightly to soften the residue, then wipe it with a cloth and a little rubbing alcohol. Never scrape a cold plate.
The scent faded after ten minutes
The resin has given what it had, or the piece was very small. Lift the spent resin off and add a fresh pinch. Spent resin will not revive.
How long a jar actually lasts
Most people badly overestimate what one session takes. At one or two rice-grain pieces a day, a jar lasts months rather than weeks. The most common mistake by a distance is using far too much on day one, deciding the scent is overwhelming, and blaming the resin.
Which one, and when
- Black Damar - evenings, winding down, a room you want to feel still. Warm pine and smoke.
- White Damar - mornings and working hours. Lemon zest and fresh pine, bright and lifting.
- Eucalyptus & Damar - daytime, clearing the air, and the gentlest place to start. Green and clean over soft resin.
Safety, briefly
Use in a ventilated room. Keep burners on a flat, heat-tolerant surface, away from anything that catches. Never leave a hot burner or a lit tealight unattended. Keep both well away from children and pets. Let everything cool completely before you clean or store it.
